If you’re an easily distracted cook, you’ll know the regular panic of dashing to rescue pans as they boil over on the hob.
Finding the sweet spot between cooking your food and flooding your kitchen is an exact science, and one many of us – more often than not – get wrong.
But one TikTok user has shared a method to stop it from happening ever again, and the clip has been watched a staggering 8.5 million times as viewers were left fuming they had never been told before.
Sidneyraz has become hugely popular on the platform, sharing informative videos of life hacks he wish he had known before he was 30, including breaking the news that we’ve all been using travel pillows wrong.
Sid simply explains: “You can stop a pot from boiling over by putting a wooden spoon on it.”
He then walks over to a pan of boiling water just as it is about to spill over, before placing the handle of the spoon across the pot to show the bubble immediately retreating back down.
Some people were left mind-blown by the tip, with one writing: “Wait what? Am I even breathing correctly at this point?”
Other were baffled that the hack was news to so many viewers, with another raging: “THERE IS NO WAY PEOPLE DIDN’T KNOW THAT.”
And plenty just wanted to know the logic behind the claim, with one asking: “How the hell is it even working?”
In a bid to answer it, one viewer commented: “So for everyone who is confused, here is the science behind it: the bubbles are afraid of wood and do their best to stay away. Hope this helped.”
But a second gave a more plausible explanation, commenting: “It breaks up the bubbles’ cohesion. Like touch a drop of water on a flat surface. It’ll fall apart and spread out.”
